Living in a different state my entire life and transitioning to Columbus, Ohio was something I was not fully prepared for. The Ohio State University has a large population of out-of-state students, but it also has in-state students that know where to go and what to do on campus. This was hard for me at first, but once I learned how to navigate Ohio on my own, the transition became easier.

Get to know the area
Exploring the campus and surrounding areas was one of the ways I became more comfortable with my new home. Even though I toured Ohio State before I moved to Ohio, I still did not understand the different areas of campus. Every semester, my roommate and I take a walk around campus to find our class buildings before the semester starts. It helps us get familiar with the different buildings, and it is also a fun way to explore the city!
Build a support system
Whether it is meeting friends where I am living this year or becoming involved in a club, my support system has been the most crucial part of navigating OSU. At first I did not know many people which made my move harder, but once I joined the PRactice and PRSSA it became easier to connect with both in-state and out-of-state students. Going to involvement fairs, researching clubs related to your major, becoming a peer mentor and the list goes on.

Talk to your advisors and professors
Realizing your advisors and professors truly want what is best for you was a game changer for me. Reaching out when you are having a hard time with an assignment, having questions about a topic, and or just need guidance makes a difference when you know you have that support. Making those connections were a huge part of why I love The Ohio State University and I am thriving in a new state.
Overall, once you are involved it is easy to navigate your new life. Do not be afraid to reach out to the resources Ohio State has to offer!
