Embracing the Unknown

By: Carly Illos

Leaving my hometown for college and moving to Ohio was a decision I was not sure was right for me. Once I arrived, I realized it was one of the best choices I could have made. I believe studying abroad will be a similar experience, that is why I know I need to take this opportunity. I have not gone yet, but here is why I am excited for this journey:

Pushing Myself Outside of My Comfort Zone

Living in a new country will allow me to see the world in a new way. Growing up in a small town limited me to the different customs, languages, and lifestyles around the world. Stepping into the unknown may feel overwhelming at first, but these challenges will help me grow into an independent and confident person to handle new situations!

Gaining New Perspectives

Studying abroad is not just about visiting new places, being able to experience life in a different environment is what I find fascinating. I am excited to gain a new perspective on culture, including how businesses operate and what shapes daily life. Engaging myself in a new way of living life will expand my knowledge of the world.

Creating Lifelong Memories

Living in Florence, Italy will be filled with unforgettable moments. Whether that is bonding with individuals over our shared adventures or building valuable connections while being an intern, I know this journey of my life will leave a lasting impact. Taking this opportunity is important, not only for my own personal growth, but also for gaining real-world experiences that will benefit my future career.

Even though I have not left for this adventure yet, I am confident that this journey will challenge and inspire me. It will push me outside of my comfort zone, encouraging me to adjust to unfamiliar environments. Personal growth comes from embracing the unknown, rather than remaining in a space you are comfortable with.
