Why Practicing Gratitude Matters

By: Ellie Kulberg

Practicing gratitude can take many forms: expressing gratitude to others (like writing a thank-you note), meditating while focusing on what you’re grateful for, creating a gratitude jar filled with short notes of appreciation, keeping a gratitude journal – writing about what you are grateful for, and volunteering your time and energy to other people.

Choosing a thankful mindset is a powerful step to long-term happiness and success. Here are 4 benefits of practicing gratitude:

  1. Increased Happiness and Well-being

Practicing gratitude is a great way to increase your happiness and well-being. Focusing on the positive in your life and appreciating what you have has been proven to boost one’s joy, optimism, and emotional resilience. When you take the time to notice the good in life, big or small, you’re able to view challenges with positivity and strength. Reframing your thoughts can transform your perspective on the world and your life.

  1. Reduced Stress and Anxiety

Taking the time to reflect on what you’re grateful for calms both your body and mind, as it helps block out outside stressors. Rather than focusing on what is going wrong or what you’re worried about, you’re able to shift your attention to appreciating what you have and what’s going well in the moment. Gratitude helps you stay present instead of worrying or stressing about the past or future. Expressing gratitude lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and increases feelings of peace and balance. Maintaining a grateful mindset is key to living a less stressful and anxiety-filled life.

  1. Fosters Stronger Relationships

Gratitude can help strengthen and deepen your relationships. When you express gratitude toward others—whether through words of affirmation or thoughtful actions—you have the power to brighten someone’s day. Doing good things for others can boost your own sense of fulfillment and positively impact both personal and professional relationships. Gratitude fosters meaningful connections, while also enhancing empathy and building resilience in the face of conflict.

  1. Increased Appreciation and Fulfillment

Practicing gratitude helps you appreciate the little things in life. Even the smallest gestures—like complimenting someone or buying their coffee—can have a meaningful impact on both your life and theirs. Seeking out the joy and beauty in your surroundings fosters a deeper sense of appreciation and fulfillment.
